The Uplands, for the most part, is served by a
combined sewer and storm drainage system, where both
sewage and rainwater are passed through a single
pipe.
At
the provincial level, the regulation of municipal
sewer systems has changed significantly over the
years, and the Municipality of Oak Bay is now
required to separate the existing combined system
into two separate systems.
The
Municipality has submitted a plan to comply with the
provincial regulation, which has been approved for
two-thirds funding from the federal and provincial
governments. The approach to be used is the
construction of a new low pressure sanitary sewer
system, with the
existing system being used for storm water, although the detailed design of the system is in a very
preliminary stage.
Individual property owners in the Uplands will be
required to separate the sewer lines on their
property (if they are not already), install a pump
and connect their sanitary sewer line to the new
system.
The
purpose of this webpage is to provide information to
interested residents on the low pressure sanitary
sewer system approach, along with other related
information that may be of interest and assist in
answering questions residents may have. Further
